When it comes to finding the best mattress, it's what's on the inside that matters. The materials comprising its inner layers determine how well you'll sleep.

One used commonly is latex, but not all latex is created equally. There are two main types: natural and synthetic.

###### Synthetic Latex

Synthetic latex is typically made of petroleum-based oils and chemical additives, such as formaldehyde, and even flame retardants. These chemicals are harmful to human health, and off-gas into the air inside your home. Once airborne, these chemicals are absorbed into the dust you and your family breathe and touch, and can potentially lead to a variety of illnesses.

###### Natural Latex

Natural latex is a healthier alternative to synthetic latex, and lacks the dangerous chemicals and additives found within the latter.

Natural latex is made from the pure sap of a rubber treea cloudy, white liquid that can be extracted and processed.

###### How Natural Latex is Made

First, the rubber trees are tapped, whereby a thin layer of bark is removed and the liquid raw material funneled into a container. To prevent clumping, manufacturers mix in a marginal amount of ammonia. Without it, the raw rubber wouldn’t be suitable for processing.

Next, this raw material is sent to a processing station, where it’s strained to remove particles, and concentrated. The latex is then placed in a centrifuge, which removes water and further concentrates the rubber. At this point, the latex can go through two methods of processing: either the Talalay or Dunlop process.

###### Why You Need A Natural Latex Mattress

Regardless of the exact process the natural latex goes through, it's an extraordinary material for a mattress. If you're not sleeping on a mattress with natural latex inside, you're missing out on its incredible benefits.

• Natural latex is environmentally friendly. The rubber trees heal quickly, and they can produce latex for up to 30 years. It's also bio-degradable.
• Natural latex is breathable, reducing heat retention within the mattress, and providing a cooler sleep.
• Natural latex is hypoallergenic and dust mite-, mildew-, and mold-resistant.
• It conforms to your body, providing you with an extremely comfortable sleep.
• Natural latex lends superior support, which keeps your spine aligned while you sleep.
• It provides cushion for common pressure points, such as hips and shoulders.
• A natural latex mattress lasts longer than conventional mattresses, while keeping their shape.
• It emits no off-gassing of harmful chemicals, providing you with a healthier sleep.
• Natural latex doesn't transfer motion, so you can sleep well even when your partner gets out of bed or rolls over.
