One of the biggest tasks of moving is sorting through months' or maybe even years' worth of stuff and deciding what stays and what goes. Then, there's the arduous process of actually moving your things to your new home.
As you begin, make a checklist of the items you'll need to move: TV? Check. Kitchen table? Check. Your favorite chair in the living room? Obviously.
But what about your mattress?
I know what you're thinking: "Of course I'm bringing my mattress!" But perhaps you should reconsider lugging that old bed along with you. Moving is the best time to get a new mattress. Here's why:
1. You Probably Need A New Mattress
Think of the last time you purchased a new mattress. If it was more than 10 years ago, you're due for a new one! Don't waste your time, money or effort carting your old mattress to your new home. Buy a new one and have it delivered there!
2. Your Mattress Is... Gross
Over time, your mattress becomes home to a ton of unwelcome guests: fungi, bacteria, animal dander, pollen, dead skin cells, dust mites (an average used mattress can have 100,000 to 10 million dust mites), and sweat (26 gallons each year, to be exact). Don't give all these stowaways a free lift to your new pad. Leave them behind, and get a new (and cleaner) start.
3. Moving A Mattress is Risky
Moving your mattress can be a risky proposition, especially if it's a long-distance move. Even if it's properly packed, your mattress is still prone to rips, tears, water damage, dirt and bacteria.
4. Out With The Old, In With The New
A new home means a fresh start. You're probably replacing some furniture and decor, so why not your mattress? Toss your old spring mattress to the curb and opt for an amazing (spring-free) bed instead. You'll feel great and sleep better.
5. Easy Adjustment
Sleeping in a new place is always a little strange. So, when you move into a new home, there's somewhat of an adjustment period. Replace your old mattress with a new mattress that'll put you right to sleep—making your adjustment period a whole lot smoother!
