Latex Foam Mattress: Pros And Cons

A great mattress starts with great material.

So, before purchasing, it's beneficial to compare the many pros and cons of a latex foam mattress to determine whether it's truly the best match for you.

Types of Latex Mattresses

There are two main categories of latex—natural and synthetic—and each possess unique characteristics.

Here's a brief overview:

Synthetic Latex

Synthetic latex is typically made of petroleum-based oils and chemical additives, such as formaldehyde, and even flame retardants. These are harmful to human health, and off-gas into the air inside your home. Once airborne, these chemicals are absorbed into the dust you and your family breathe and touch, and can potentially lead to a variety of illnesses.

Natural Latex

Natural latex is a healthier alternative to synthetic latex, and lacks the dangerous chemicals and additives found within the latter. It is made from the pure sap of a rubber tree—a cloudy, white liquid which is extracted, processed, and turned into latex. Natural latex is manufactured through either the Dunlop or Talalay process, each creating a wholly unique latex with unique properties. (Learn more about these differences HERE.)

Latex Mattress Pros

Environmentally Friendly

Natural latex is made from rubber trees, and its manufacturing process is typically very "green." These trees can produce latex for up to 30 years. Natural latex is also bio-degradable.

Breathable

Latex has a naturally open-cell structure, promoting air flow and reducing heat retention for more comfortable, cooler sleep.

Firmness

Latex is typically firmer, providing plenty of support. (More on this in a hot minute!)

Healthy

Latex is naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite-, mildew- and mold-resistant.

Uplifting Support

Unlike memory foam, which makes you feel like you're sinking into the mattress, latex provides a cradling, uplifting support. You'll feel like you're sleeping on top of a mattress, not in a mattress

Supportive

Natural latex gives superior support, which keeps your body and spine aligned while you sleep—great for those suffering from back pain.

Pressure Points

Latex provides cushioning for common pressure point areas, such as hips and shoulders.

Durable

A natural latex mattress lasts longer than conventional mattresses, while retaining its shape and support.

No Off-Gassing

Natural latex emits no off-gassing of harmful chemicals, so you can breathe easy while you sleep.

No motion Transfer

You won't be disrupted when your partner (or dog) gets out of bed or rolls over in their sleep!

Latex Mattress Cons

Firmness

This can be a con if you're someone who prefers a softer mattress.

Weight

Latex is typically heavier than other materials, which makes moving your mattress slightly more difficult. You likely won't be moving your mattress too often, however, so this isn't a huge downfall.

Cost

Latex mattresses are typically more expensive, though there are companies (such as PangeaBed!) creating affordable mattresses consisting of truly exceptional materials, including latex.
