How Memory Foam Effects Your Sleep

No one would be surprised to learn that the quality of a mattress goes hand-in-hand with how well you sleep.

Everything from the level of firmness to the materials the mattress is made out of can affect sleep behavior. And with so many options available, it can be difficult to discern which type of mattress is best for you. So when shopping for a new mattress, pay close attention to its composition. Memory foam, for example, is probably one of the most commonly used mattress materials, but have you ever considered how it impacts your sleep?

What is Memory Foam?

Interestingly, memory foam was created in the 1970s for NASA to provide relief for astronauts experiencing the forces of gravity. Now, the material is used in thousands of households and considered one of the most-popular components of mattresses.

Memory foam is a soft material that is made from polyurethane and additives that increase its density and viscosity. Since it is heat-sensitive, memory foam is firm at room temperature and softens and molds to your body as you lay on it. Memory foam returns to its original shape once pressure is no longer applied.

How Does Memory Foam Affect Sleep?

Memory foam can be a great addition to a mattress. Aside from its reputation as one of the most comfortable mattress styles, memory foam is known to impact sleep habits in a number of other ways. Here are several:

  • Memory Foam molds itself to support all your body's contours.
  • Memory Foam redistributes body weight and provides support to your neck, back, shoulders, knees, and legs.
  • Memory Foam improves circulation, and reduces spinal pressure.
  • It contours to your lower back, enabling the muscles to fully relax and release tension.

Is all that support good for your back? And do all these apparent benefits promote a healthy sleep experience? Well, as with most things in life, the answer is complicated. Although memory foam by itself is great compared to most other mattress-making materials, it does have some significant downfalls. Among these:

  • Since it retains heat, it tends to be warmand sometimes even hotwhile you sleep.
  • Some feel that memory foam causes them to sink too deep into the mattress.
  • Memory foam gets softer through age and use.
  • The foam can contain harmful chemicals. Make sure any memory foam you purchase is Certi-PUR US-certified.

Instead of purchasing a bed made solely of memory foam to reduce back pain, finding a mattress that combines several materials built to support your back can offset some of the aforementioned negatives. One study in particular found that replacing patients' beds with new medium-firm mattresses, layered with memory foam and latex, provided significant improvement in both back and shoulder pain.

How PangeaBed Can Help

Our copper mattress is created with three layers specially designed to properly support your back. This trio works together to keep your spine fully supported, and to help relieve common back pain issues caused by poor spine alignment while you sleep.

  1. Our top layer of copper-infused, 100-percent pure Talalay latex provides unique uplifting support to align your spine, neck, and head. In addition to exceptional comfort, it works to reduce aches, pains, and pressure points in your back.
  2. Under that is a layer of PangeaBed™ Cool Gel memory foam, which softens to conform to your body, including your spine. It works to keep your spine fully supported and in proper alignment, and keeps you at the perfect temperature while you sleep.
  3. At the base of the mattress is a thick layer of high-density foam that conforms to your body weight to offer superior support for your spine.

Since we use Talalay latex on top of our layers of memory foam, you don't get the heat retention, sinking feel, or natural breakdown commonly associated with memory foam mattresses. This perfect combination of memory foam and Talalay latex has helped many of our customers' back pain improve, or even disappear altogether.

But don't take our word for it! Here's what one reviewer said:

"There is no dipping in the middle, it really does support your whole body. I am a side sleeper and have chronic lower back pain so finding a supportive yet soft and pliable mattress is very important to me. I am truly happy with this bed and you can't beat the price!”
